Sound of Heimat - Germany sings!

Cinema Documentary, Germany 2012, 90’

What could a New Zealand saxophonist of Scottish descent hope to find behind a milk churn in the East German boondocks? The answer is simple: musical extravagance! And homeland. What sounds confusing at first, Hayden Chisholm turns into a musical adventure trip with cult appeal. The charismatic musician offers us a fresh look at our homeland: zappy, colorful and emotional – full of life and full of music.

In search of old hands of folk music, Hayden makes many bizarre acquaintances, cheerfully drinking toasts with the whole musician group of regulars and joining in many a polka with his saxophone and clarinette. The wide variety of German folk music that hardly plays a role in our everyday life is portrayed here in its full splendor, revealing undreamt-of stimuli, the authentic charm of which we as surprised observers cannot resist.

“Sound of Heimat is an impressive roadtrip..." Spiegel Online

„At the end of this smart and lyrical film Hayden Chisholm reckons that he has found the "German Soul“. Magical melodies, lots of pleasure and a touch of melancholia." Neues Deutschland, Berlin

„Folk Music far away from Musikantenstadl & Co. Sound of Heimat is a felicitous documentary - entertaining and surprising“ TTT - "Titel Thesen Temperamente", ARD / Das Erste
